How far should you drive on empty?

Is it okay to drive with your fuel light on?

We can’t think of one person who enjoys stopping at the gas station after a long day or night at work to refuel the car, especially in the extremes of winter and summer, when you just want to stay comfortable. But, it’s a fact of life and something we simply have to do from time to time. The fact that it is an errand or a chore might cause some folks to delay filling up the gas tank until the very last moment when you’re afraid you’re running on fumes and your fuel light has been on for a day or two. Is it okay to drive with your fuel light on? No, and we’ll tell you why.

Is your luxury vehicle ready for winter?

Why you should refuel as soon as possible

It is estimated that many vehicles on the roads these days can end up driving for about 30 to 45 miles or so once the fuel gauge needle has been stuck on empty. Really though, it all depends on what vehicle you’re driving. Different types of vehicles, such as compact cars, burn fuel more efficiently than others, like pickup trucks or large SUVs. Plus, over the years, vehicles have gotten to be much more efficient with many advances in engineering and technology, so it will depend on how new or old your vehicle is as well.

Are you looking to finance a vehicle in the Tri-State Area?

When you are running on empty, the fuel pump is working harder and could get damaged by sediment deposits that were stuck in the bottom of the tank. If such damage occurs, we can assure you it will be pricey and a huge pain in the neck. You don’t want to deal with that.

Quite simply, just do not risk it when your fuel is low. Pay attention to your instrument panel and work a plan to stop at the gas station into your day so you won’t get left stranded by an empty fuel tank.
